As near record voters pulled their levers, punched their chads, and handed in their paper ballots, a clear message was sent to the status quo: this country has been heading in the wrong direction for far too long. The Land of Lincoln was no exception. The voters of the 41st General Assembly District are ready for something new. They are ready for independent, progressive values to be introduced to Springfield and across the board. What was quite special about this specific election year was that Illinois had Green Party candidates in every single precinct throughout the state! Thank you to my loving and encouraging family, to my campaign manager and good friend Mike Foerstel, and to all my hard-working supporters. I could not have accomplished anything without you along the way. We made this another monumental year for democracy. We were heard loud and clear and we are here to stay.
We put up a good grassroots fight and there will be many more opportunities to forge bonds and coalitions to build upon our Green Party presence in the 2008 elections, but the fight’s not over. Even though over one million Illinoisans voted, we have to continue to participate in civic engagement to assure our leaders are working for the needs of their constituencies. We cannot merely sit at home until the next election. To my supporters and to citizens abroad: band together, demand justice, demand truth, and ultimately demand democracy. We cannot sleep until 2010. It is not far away and with a bit more elbow grease and stronger volunteer efforts, we can win! We can make the social and political changes we want and so desperately require. I will not do it alone though.
Remember, it is only a democracy if you make it one.
Here's what you can do in the meantime to help us prepare for a 2010 Green victory: |
