Ethics and Electoral Reform Matter

A democracy relies heavily on citizens participating in the governing process.  In turn, a democratic government is supposed to be responsive to the participatory citizenry.  With a General Assembly which has ignored and neglected many of the voices coming from the public, there must be measures taken to assure citizens their right to govern. I support placing a holiday status on Election Day. The most democratic value in our society is having the right to vote and yet the majority of Americans do not take this opportunity. I will pledge to maintain transparency in government by posting my full schedule, showing who I meet with and the subjects discussed.

Additionally, I will propose legislation to:

  • Create an Open Ballot Initiative giving citizens the power to put statewide measures on the ballot and establish Recall Elections to allow voters to remove
an elected official from office if need be.
  • Institute Instant Run-off Voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference.  IRV broadens voter participation by accommodating multiple candidates in single seat races and assuring that a "spoiler effect" will not result in undemocratic outcomes.
  • Repeal HB662…equal ballot access for all political parties!
  • Restoring democracy in the General Assembly by pushing the Constitutional "Show Us" Amendment.
